Zero Waste Scotland is on a mission to turn Scotland into a waste-less society, new waste management regulations are coming into force for businesses at the beginning of next year. The regulations aim to revolutionise the way waste is presented for collection, so what does this mean for your company and are you prepared?
Why Is Zero Waste So Important?
The green revolution is taking hold all over the UK, Europe and beyond and Scotland is no exception. Zero Waste Scotland is aiming to dramatically reduce the almost £100 million annually paid in landfill taxes because of unnecessarily thrown away recyclables. The value of recyclable materials currently ending up in Scottish landfills is around £97million which could be put back into the country’s economy, the new regulations are coming into force so that anything that can be reused is reused to help Scotland reach its target of recycling 70% of waste and landfilling only 5% by 2025.
What Are The Regulations
The Zero Waste Regulations will affect all businesses, non-profit organisations and public sector bodies in Scotland. Metal, plastic, paper, card and glass will be banned from landfill sites so business will be required to separate them from the rest of their waste.
What Will Be The Benefit Of The New Regulations
The director of Zero Waste Scotland states that the regulations are designed to help the citizen body realise the value of the resources that are being thrown away and hopes that they see these regulations as a great economic opportunity for Scotland. The regulations will come into play on the 1st of January 2014 so now is the time to prepare and make your business zero waste ready.Scotland’s goal to become a zero waste society is both ambitious and inspiring.
